Youth-led event in Brussels to tackle online sexual harassment.
On 11th April 2019 in Brussels, we will be launching much-needed and ground-breaking resources to help tackle online sexual harassment among young people. We will bring experts from the UK, Denmark and Hungary who have been working on this issue for the past two years. The launch will also be an opportunity to meet and talk to young people from these countries and hear them talk about what support they need from professionals.
What will the event be about?
Sexual harassment is not a new phenomenon, but the ‘audience’ and ‘evidence’ provided by digital technology facilitates it and has opened the door for new forms of sexual harassment.
Project deSHAME is a project, co-financed by the EU, seeking to address the issue of the under-reporting of online sexual harassment among young people, as well as promoting a multi-agency response to this issue. The Project is comprised of a partnership between Childnet International, Save the Children Denmark, Kek Vonal (Hungary) and UCLan (the University of Central Lancashire). We have conducted extensive research on this issue which you can see in full here.
As part of this project, we have created resources to support educators, law enforcement, and young people themselves. It is vital this work happens to prevent harmful norms forming as part of young people’s online behaviour and expectations, and makes clear to young people that support is available as we encourage them to report this behaviour when it happens.
To discuss the resources and the wider issues it addresses we will be bringing a youth delegation from the UK, Denmark and Hungary as well as experts who have conducted research and created these resources.
