What is the Childnet Digital Leaders Programme?

19 July 2023

The Childnet Digital Leaders Programme is an initiative that strives to educate and empower young people to use the internet safely and responsibly.

This programme is an innovative peer-to-peer education platform designed for schools and youth organisations. Its interactive and engaging approach aims to help young people become advocates for the positive and safe use of technology in their educational settings and beyond.

Who’s the Programme for?

Our programme is designed to empower young people aged 8-18 with the skills and knowledge they need to advocate digital literacy and safety among their peers. The programme is available to schools, youth groups, and other organisations who share our commitment to this important cause.

We cover a range of important topics, including:

  • Gaming
  • Misinformation
  • Online Bullying
  • Parental controls
  • Pornography
  • Reporting
  • Sexting
  • Social Media
Our educational experts have worked in consultation with young people to create content covering a wide range of topics that are relevant to young people.

The Benefits of the Programme

The Childnet Digital Leaders who have completed the programme have reported the following improvements:

• Enhanced confidence and understanding of the use of technology.
• Improved communication skills.
• Increased awareness of online risks and the ability to safely navigate them.
• Digital literacy certification, which can equip you with skills that employers highly value.

We have received feedback from teachers indicating that our programme cultivates greater awareness of online safety throughout their entire school. 75% of these teachers would highly recommend our programme to other schools or youth organisations.

The Programme Resources

The programme offers a variety of activities, resources, and tools to help young people become Digital Leaders and promote digital literacy and safety among their peers. There are a few resources to help you and your young people make the most of the online learning platform and its benefits. These include:

  • Digital Leaders Training Course: This online course helps young people become aware, understand, and promote the positive and safe use of the internet. This includes educational videos, interactive animations, questionnaires, and fun rewarding points
  • Digital Leaders Resource Pack: A pack of resources that includes posters, activity sheets and more
  • Online Communities: The platform includes a community element where young people can interact with each other in the same school or with other young people from across the UK with their teacher’s oversight.
  • Gamified Platform: As young people progress; they will gain points and virtual badges designed to encourage them to complete the programme. This can also be used to encourage healthy competition with your youth group or class
