Ways to put a focus on online safety with your whole family this half term

24 May 2022

Is it that time already?

Half term is just around the corner, so here are some fun and engaging resources and activities to help your whole family to think about the importance of online safety.

Encourage your child to make a storyboard for the Childnet Film Competition

Does your child like drawing and films?

The competition closes on June 8th – whilst it might be a squeeze to start making a film over half term, your child can still create a storyboard and be in with a chance of winning a prize!

The hugely popular Childnet Film Competition Storyboard category is back and open to all young people based in the UK. Storyboard must reflect this year’s theme and be between 6 and 12 frames long.

Head to the webpage to see example storyboards for inspiration, and see what prizes are up for grabs…

Moving on up!

What with the end of the academic year hurtling around the corner, now would be an opportune moment to start looking at our Moving on Up resource.

The transition from primary to secondary education is a significant and emotional process to go through as a family. The resource we have created provides all of the information you need to ensure that you can support your child with changes to their online lives.

Here is what you can expect to find out about in Moving on Up:

  • Giving your child new devices (including the first phone checklist)
  • Helping your child with an expanding circle of friends
  • Responding to peer pressure and online bullying
  • Digital wellbeing

My Life Online – conversation guide

These resources have been produced as part of Thrive Online and are designed to empower all young people – including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) – to build happy and healthy online relationships.

This resource includes guidance to support any adult (parent, carer, or professional) to establish an open, respectful conversation about using the internet and technology safely and positively, as well as a template for recording what has been discussed.

Digiduck stories

The Digiduck collection has been created to help parents and carers educate children aged 3 – 7 about online safety. The collection includes ebooks, PDFs, a poster and an interactive app.

With five FREE stories to download, you could read one story to your child each night of half term.

Topics in the Digiduck collection include:

  • Being a good friend to others on the internet
  • Reliability of online information
  • Positive use of the internet to help others

It’s never too early to start learning about online safety!
