Nigel Williams – Childnet’s founder dies

28 March 2006

Childnet International today announced the death of Nigel Williams, Childnet’s founder and first CEO (1995-2003).

A year after stepping down as CEO of Childnet in July 2003 to become the first N.Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People, Nigel was diagnosed with cancer. Despite having to undergo extensive chemotherapy sessions and periods of considerable pain he continued in his job as Commissioner up until February 2006 when he was admitted into Belfast City Hospital.

Stephen Carrick-Davies Childnet CEO said, “Nigel was a remarkable leader who demonstrated enormous courage in establishing Childnet 11 years ago. He worked hard to help make the world a better place for children and young people and had the foresight to predict many of the emerging issues of child’s use of the Internet both in terms of the child safety issues but also the potential for children to use the internet positively for social benefit. All those involved in Childnet will miss him greatly and we want to send our sincere condolences to the family at this time of loss”

A special website www.celebratingnigel.org has been put together by the Childnet team to allow people to share their memories of Nigel and give details of the funeral and services of thanksgiving as well opportunities for people to make donations to a children’s cancer charity in lieu of flowers.

See official announcement from the N.Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People office www.niccy.org.
