Celebrating World Book Day 2024 with Childnet

7 March 2024

World Book Day joins over 100 countries together, to celebrate a love of books and inspire reading all year round. 2024 World Book Day is being celebrated with the theme ‘Changing lives through a love of books and reading’.

At Childnet we have a range of brilliant stories that you can share as a family or within your education setting. All of our books are free to download on our website, and are designed to suit different ages and reading abilities.

On the Internet

On the Internet is a learning to read book for children aged four and above. It has been written for your child to read, with your help when needed.

There is no ‘right’ or ‘expected’ number of words for your child to read in this book, this will be based entirely on their ability. The main aim of the book is simply to enjoy reading together and to talk about life online.

The Digiduck Collection

The Digiduck collection of stories has been created specifically to help parents, carers, and educators, talk to children aged 3-7 about online safety. The series includes eBooks, PDFs, a poster, and activities.

In Digiduck’s Big Decision – the first book in the collection – help arrives just in time for Digiduck when faced with a difficult decision online.

Meanwhile, in Digiduck’s Famous Friend, Digiduck and his classmates are set the task of finding out who their special guest will be at school. Through chatting online and asking questions they try to decide who the mystery guest is.

The third in the series, Detective Digiduck, encourages young children to start thinking about online content, helping them to understand that what they read or see online might be true, untrue, or someone’s opinion.

The fourth story, Digiduck and the Magic Castle, focusses on playing games online. Other themes within the book include peer pressure, password sharing, and in-app purchasing. The aim of this story is to help start conversations between children and adults about many aspects of online gaming.

The fifth story in the Digiduck series, Digiduck Saves the Day, focuses on positive uses of the internet to help others. This final story aims to recap all the advice that Wise_Owl has given Digiduck and his friends in each of the previous books, whilst exploring the amazing ways that technology can be used to get things done quickly.

There is also a Digiduck Activity Menu with plenty of fun and creative follow-up activity ideas to help reinforce and support the learning that has taken place.

Hanni and the Magic Window

Hanni and the Magic Window is a rhyming story with illustrations.

In this story, instead of using a device, the online world is represented through a magical window that allows Hanni to see some amazing things.

When something happens that upsets Hanni, she struggles to find the right words to tell someone what has happened. This story demonstrates how wonderful and magical the online world can be and reinforces the importance of speaking up and getting help from a trusted adult if anything happens that worries or upsets you.
