Guardian Saints announce winner of their Safer Internet Day Competition

16 August 2017

The winner of the Guardian Saints Safer Internet Day Competition has been announced.

Skye, one of Family Fostercare West Midlands’ foster children, won the competition by creating the idea for an app to support children who are coming in to care.

The competition required children to complete a survey about online safety, and to supply an idea for a website or app that they felt would be particularly helpful for children in care.

The young people’s ideas were judged by a panel of experts which included; the foster son of one of the founders of Guardian Saints, Steve Pankhurst – Founder of Friends Reunited, Peter Oliver – MD Consumer Commercial Marketing and Digital at BT and Geoff Owen from Research in Practice.

Skye’s winning idea was for a website or app specifically for children coming into care to help them know what to expect, with video content produced by a diverse cross-section of looked after children, acknowledging their place as the only true experts in what it’s like to be a child in care.

Guardian Saints was formed in 2014 by two parents and a foster carer who were becoming increasingly concerned about the dangers the online world was presenting to children.
