New advice for managing your school’s online reputation

2 November 2016

The London Grid for Learning, alongside the UK Safer Internet Centre, have designed new advice for keeping a professional reputation online.

This guidance contains practical steps for maintaining the school’s online reputation across social media sites including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

The guidance also looks at what to do if you find negative content about your school, how to manage what has already been said and how to ensure that future content is more positive. It also covers what to do if someone has created a fake profile of the school on a social media site.

The guide contains tips from the Professional Online Safety Helpline (POSH). Katherine is a practitioner for the helpline and has explained why maintaining a good online reputation is so important for schools.

“Online Reputation remains the most prevalent issue on the helpline with half of all calls made relating to this since the beginning of the academic year. Teachers are teaching in a generation where digital technologies are readily available to the majority of the population, so it’s more important now than ever before to keep an eye on a school’s presence online. With many members of the school community taking to their devices to find out the latest information about school, it only takes one person’s opinion shared to spark off a heated debate. By keeping an ear to the ground, schools’ can help prevent incidents like this from escalating further and take back control. We’d always recommend that any professional facing an issue relating to online reputation gives the helpline a call on 0344 381 4772 or emails [email protected] where one of our Helpline Practitioners can offer further support and advice.”
