Childnet Film Competition – What happens next?

19 June 2017

Thank you to everyone who entered the 2017 Childnet Film Competition! The standard of entries this year has been very high and the judges now have the very difficult task of deciding on this year’s finalists!

This was the seventh annual Childnet Film Competition inviting young people aged 7-16 years to create short films to inspire their peers to use technology safely, responsibly and positively. Harnessing the positive power of digital creativity, the project gives young people an opportunity to take the lead in educating and empowering young people in their school and across the UK. The Childnet Film competition is delivered as part of Childnet’s work in the UK Safer Internet Centre.

What happens next?

Our panel of experts are now working on making the shortlist of finalists for this year’s film competition! These finalists will be notified that they have been shortlisted on Monday 19th June. The finalists for each category will then be invited to the Film Competition Finalists’ Event at the BFI on London’s Southbank.

The finalists’ event is an exciting chance for the young people to see their films on big screen, talk about their films to industry guests and then find out who has taken 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category!

The judges

Judging the finalists’ films is our panel of experts. These are members of industry who will look out for films which are the most creative, are closest to the theme and have a clear message. Deciding this year’s winners will be:

David Austin OBE – Chief Executive, British Board of Film Classification (BBFC)

Joanna van der Meer – Film Tutor and Family Learning Programmer, BFI Southbank

Catherine McAllister – Lead for online safety and Head of Safeguarding in the Children’s department, BBC
