Childnet welcome the return of the Online Safety Bill

29 November 2022

The team at Childnet welcome the significant news that the Online Safety Bill will be returning to parliament in December.

Speaking during Business Questions on 24th November, Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt MP confirmed discussions about the Bill would restart on Monday 5 December.

Childnet’s mission is to make internet a great and safe place for young people to enjoy. We welcome the Government’s additions of the criminalisation of “deepfakes” and “downblousing”, which are invasive, non-consensual, and damaging.

In its continued handling of the Bill, we encourage parliament to prioritize the safeguarding and protection of children and young people.

Online safety becomes more important as our lives connect more to technology and the internet – today, 91% of the UK’s 14-year-olds own a smart phone, and it is important that we make the internet a safe space for them to explore and make the most of.

Regulation together with an effective regulator can make a great difference in helping online environments be safer for children.
