Olympian Vicki Hayles cycling 100 miles for Childnet

27 June 2014

Former Olympian Vicki Hayles is cycling 100 miles in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 to raise funds for Childnet. We caught up with her to find out how her training is going, and why, as a parent of two young children, she wanted to support Childnet’s work.

How did you get into cycling?

I was inspired to take up cycling as a way of keeping fit after having two children. It’s a great mode of transport so keeping fit whilst getting to work!

Has your husband, Olympic cyclist Rob Hayles, given you any tips?

Rob gives me tonnes of advice. He got me my new Beacon Fell bike which I’m loving, and also helps with the tech side which I’m rubbish with!!

How is your training going?

What did you learn as an Olympic swimmer that will help you in the race?

Being a former Olympian helps so so much as I’m aware of my limitations, understand when I need to fuel and when I need to back off in training as the strains of busy work and home life take their toll.

Why are you cycling for Childnet?

As I mentioned I have two young children, and they are just starting to be more independent with using their own devices. It is so very important to protect them from the wrong kind of internet use.

How can people support you?
